Meet Our Director & Team
Master Jae Hyeon Jeon
Founder & Director of American Sports Academy – Oregon
Master Jae Hyeon Jeon was born and raised in South Korea, where his lifelong journey in Taekwondo, sports, and education began.
Championship Roots in Korea
He started Taekwondo at a very young age and continued his training throughout middle school and high school as an elite athlete. Through years of disciplined training, often day and night, he became a regional champion and qualified to compete in many nation’s top tournaments including Korea’s National Sports Festival, one of the most respected athletic competitions in the country.
During his military service, Master Jae continued to compete and represent his team at the highest level. He won divisional and corps-level championships and was selected to represent his military command at the Korean Ministry of National Defense Championship.
Master Jae earned his bachelor’s degree in Taekwondo and Physical Education from Kyung Hee University, one of South Korea’s most prestigious universities and internationally recognized for its Taekwondo program. Along with his major, he studied teacher education, sports medicine, and business management — building a strong foundation not only as an athlete and coach, but also as an educator.
Building Champions in America
After graduating, Master Jae moved to the United States to continue his education and coaching career. While preparing for graduate studies, he coached students at the University of California, Berkeley, where he helped the team win the U.S. National Collegiate Championship.
His career advanced at American Sports University, which he attended on a full scholarship while serving as Head Coach of the university’s Taekwondo Team. During that time, he coached athletes to win in the U.S. National Championship and the U.S. Open Taekwondo Championship, guided one of his students to the final round of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, and led his team to a Silver medal at the 2008 World Team Championship — finishing second only to Team Korea, building what became recognized as one of the best teams in the nation.
Master Jae was later appointed Vice President of American Martial Arts Academy-USA, where he helped students achieve U.S. National champions and winners. He then moved to the Naperville, Illinois location, where he spent nearly 10 years developing students, building a powerhouse competition team, and helping the school become recognized as one of the top Taekwondo programs in the country.
Founding ASA-Oregon
In 2019, Master Jae stepped away from full-time coaching to focus on raising his three young children with his wife, Dr. Hermina Jeon. After moving to Oregon, he saw a growing need for a program that combined strong academics, physical development, character education, and high-quality sports training.
In 2023, he founded American Sports Academy – Oregon (ASA-Oregon). Since opening, ASA-Oregon students have earned outstanding results in state and interstate competitions. In 2025, Master Jae brought his students to the World Taekwondo Hanmadang — one of the most prestigious Taekwondo events in the world — where all the team members brought home gold.
Every part of his academic training, athletic experience, knowledge, skill, and vision is poured directly into ASA-Oregon — the culmination of a lifetime of learning, coaching, and building champions.
Beyond Taekwondo
Master Jae’s sports background extends far beyond Taekwondo. He played soccer for more than 15 years while growing up in Korea, trained in swimming for about 15 years, and taught swimming during college for approximately three plus years. He has also played golf for about 20 years, training under Dr. Edward Lee, a former PGA professional and golf instructor at UC Berkeley, with a personal best score around 80. In addition, he holds knowledge and training in many disciplines required for Korean public school physical education certification, including gymnastics, track and field, and swimming.
Our Mission
Today, Master Jae’s mission at ASA-Oregon is simple but powerful: to help students grow into confident, respectful, disciplined, and healthy individuals through Taekwondo, academics, sports, and character education.
